Xarelto May Cause Life-Threatening Side Effects

You develop serious internal bleeding. You go the ER for help. Unfortunately, there is no way to stop it. You are likely to either suffer severe internal pain and injuries, or even die, as a result.

This, unfortunately, is a scenario that many Xarelto users are now having to confront.

Xarelto, a popular prescription medication manufactured by Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiary, Janssen Pharmaceuticals, is a blood thinner approved by the FDA in July 2011. Xarelto is part of a new series of anticoagulant drugs that has grown exponentially in the U.S. market in recent years.

Prescription drugs like Xarelto were originally designed as an alternative to Warfarin, a similar blood-thinning medicine that has been in the market since the 1950s. However, recent research has shown that Xarelto has a litany of serious, potentially life-threatening side effects.

First, regular intake of Xarelto may cause an increased risk of stroke, heart attack, pulmonary embolism, and deep vein thrombosis in the patients. In fact, many patients taking medications like Xarelto have already struggled with these health issues. Second, Xarelto use can result in an increased risk of blood clotting-related injuries like gastrointestinal bleeding and severe internal hemorrhaging, especially during surgeries or following accidents.

Xarelto’s severe side effects have not been ignored entirely by the federal government. Two FDA “boxed warnings” (also known as “black box” warnings) have been prominently included on Xarelto packaging. One warning informs patients that stopping Xarelto early can increase the danger of building more blood clots. The other warning label states that Xarelto can add to serious head and spinal injuries (epidural and spinal hematoma) in patients. The danger of bleeding-related injuries and the potential danger drugs like Xarelto present to patients with prosthetic heart valves is also referenced in the warnings.

Xarelto manufacturers Johnson & Johnson and Janssen Pharmaceuticals have been already sued by numerous patients who suffered strokes, pneumonic embolisms, deep vein thrombosis, and heart attacks by using Xarelto.

Time to Take Legal Action Against Xarelto Manufacturers

People who suffer significant Xarelto side effects can require extensive hospitalization, huge medical bills and considerable time off from work. Or, even worse, they may wind up dying as a result of internal bleeding. Whether you suffered serious Xarelto side effects, or you lost a loved one who was taking Xarelto, now is the time to consider taking legal action. Obviously, no amount of money can make up for the loss of a loved one or completely heal you. Nevertheless, product liability lawsuits send a signal to the manufacturers of these drugs that safety and transparency must be made paramount. Unfortunately, it appears the Xarelto manufacturers emphasized profit over safety.
